Join us for a book reading and conversation with Agata Izabela Brewer, winner of the 2022 Gournay Prize. She will read excerpts from her memoir, The Hunger Book: A Memoir from Communist Poland.
This touching memoir delves into the author's experiences growing up behind the Iron Curtain, exploring topics such as intergenerational trauma and the complexities of maternal love.

Agata Izabela Brewer was born and raised in Poland. A teacher, a mother, an activist for immigrant rights, and a Court Appointed Special Advocate, she is Professor of English at Wabash College. Her creative writing has appeared in Guernica and Entropy. The Hunger Book is her first book of creative nonfiction.
This program is presented in partnership with the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago. The consulate will provide refreshments for guests.
The author's presentation will be accompanied by the English-language exhibition "No Bread Without Freedom" (12 3x5 panels) prepared for the Polish Embassy in Washington regarding aid transferred from the USA to communist Poland (cooperation of American Trade Unions with Solidarity).
