Learn more about becoming a foster parent to youth with special needs.
Jewish Child and Family Services is a contractor with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), responsible for the placement of trauma-affected children and youth who have been removed from their birth families. They are defined as “children-in-care” and ,as such, have a “special-needs” diagnosis, affecting their cognitive performance in school and their abilities to socialize appropriately. Our agency is in search of qualified and committed individuals and couples, to provide a safe home environment in which to guide, mentor, and role-model research-based parenting skills for both short and long-term placements. Statistically, there are more children coming into the child welfare system than there are appropriate homes of substitute care, so the urgency is significant. This information meeting will cover the following topics as well as provide adequate time for Q and A:
-how trauma affects a child who is a victim of inflicted abuse and neglect
-legal issues associated with placement goals mandated by the Juvenile Court
-behavioral issues associated with foster care
-case management and clinical services necessary for stabilization in the foster home
-licensing and training requirements for prospective foster parents
Presented by Marc Bermann of Jewish Child and Family Services, a non-denominational contractor with DCFS responsible for placement of special needs youth.
